ymbol,
necessary for life. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It is a powerful Chri=
stian
symbol too. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When you enter many c=
hurches,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>o=
ne</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> of the first things you notice is a baptismal f=
ont, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>o=
r</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> if it&#8217;s a Catholic church, a holy water f=
ont,
filled with a little water. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>You may have seen Cat=
holics
dipping their fingers into the water, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a=
nd</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> then making the sign of the cross.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It&#8217;s a way of
remembering their baptisms.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nb=
sp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In our Disciple tradi=
tion, we
use water - and a lot of it - in baptism. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But because of where =
our
baptistery is placed, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>w=
e</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> may not even think of our baptisms when we ente=
r the
sanctuary.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span>=
</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Yet baptism is one of=
 the two
sacraments we practice as Christians <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a=
nd</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> is rich with many meanings.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>So today we are going=
 to
learn about and remember our baptisms.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Our learning begins w=
ith this
story from Mark&#8217;s gospel. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The baptism of Jesus =
occurs
very early in this gospel, almost at the beginning.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Unlike Luke and Matth=
ew,
there are no infancy narratives in Mark&#8217;s gospel.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Instead the writer of=
 Mark
gets right to the point, which is a hallmark of this gospel.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The beginning of the =
good
news of Jesus Christ from this author&#8217;s perspective is that Jesus Chr=
ist
is the Son of God and the fulfillment of prophecy.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>John the Baptist is t=
he
messenger that has been sent <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>t=
o</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> proclaim this good news and to prepare the way =
of the
Lord, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>t=
o</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> make his paths straight.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></spa=
n></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And proclaim he does,=
 in the
style of the OT prophets.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:=
p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Can you picture John =
the <span
class=3DGramE>Baptist</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>John dresses in camel=
&#8217;s
hair and eats locusts and honey. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>As he wanders the dry=
 desert
wilderness of the Judean countryside, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>h=
is</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> entire focus is on proclaiming the one who is to
come.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span=
></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>He walks and climbs a=
mong the
dust and stones of the desert hills, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>h=
e</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> calls out &#8220;prepare the way.&#8221;<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Every traveling group=
 he
encounters, he shouts to them, &#8220;Repent.&#8221;<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When groups of people=
 from
Judea, from <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:City w:st=3D"on">Jerusalem</st1:Cit=
y></st1:place>,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>c=
ome</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> to him, stirred by his compelling preaching, <o=
:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>h=
e</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> walks them down to the <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><=
st1:country-region
 w:st=3D"on">Jordan</st1:country-region></st1:place> riverside and baptizes=
 them.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>He tells them that th=
is is a
baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It&#8217;s time to tu=
rn away
from sin and back to God.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:=
p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And he reminds them a=
gain and
again:<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&=
#8220;The
one who is more powerful than I is coming after me.</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>I am not worthy to st=
oop down
and untie the thong of his sandals.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>I have baptized you w=
ith
water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.&#8221;<o:p></o:p></spa=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>This story of Jesus&#=
8217;
baptism occurs in Matthew, Mark and Luke.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&=
nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It is from these and =
other
scriptures, and from Christian tradition, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>w=
e</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> have come to understand some of the meaning of
Christian baptism.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p=
></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Baptism is a means of cleansing and purifying us=
 of
our sins.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span><=
/b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Even ancient Jewish p=
ractices
associated water with <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>p=
urification</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> and consecration of the people when they had tu=
rned
away from God.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></s=
pan></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Besides cleansing, water is also a strong symbol=
 for
creation.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span><=
/b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>If we read the first =
5 verses
of Genesis, we see that in the beginning there was water, and from those wa=
ters
- and from God - life emerged.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>(READ Gen 1:1-5)<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In baptism, water becomes a symbol for a new cre=
ation,
new birth.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span>=
</b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>As we are baptized in=
to
Christ, we are reminded of the words of Paul in 2 Cor 5:<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;So if anyone i=
s in
Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; <o:p></o:p=
></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>s=
ee</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> everything has become new.&#8221; <o:p></o:p></=
span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>*Baptism is a symbol for the washing away of
sins.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></b><=
/p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>*It is a reminder that in Christ we are a new
creation.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span><=
/b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But these are not the=
 only
meanings of baptism. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Mark&#8217;s gospel h=
elps us
focus on another important meaning of baptism.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In an <span class=3DG=
ramE>extraordinary<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>verse</span> - verse 10 - <o:p></o=
:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>w=
e</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> get a visual that reveals something to us about=
 the
nature of God. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Just as Jesus is comi=
ng up
out of the water, he sees the heavens torn open, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a=
nd</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> the Spirit descending on him like a dove. <o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

 time,

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> Jesus is baptized with water and with the Holy

e of our
own baptisms.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Those who are baptize=
d in
water have a new Spirit-empowered identity in Christ.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>We are named and clai=
med by
God.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span>=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In Galatians 3 Paul w=
rites, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;As many of you=
 as were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.&#8221;<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When God names and cl=
aims us
in baptism, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>i=

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> is so significant that it changes what we look
like.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>We put on Christ. <o:p>=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The early Christians =
took
this very seriously.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o=
:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>They spent 3 years le=
arning
about the Christian teachings and the scriptures, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a=
nd</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> then early on Easter morning the catechumens as=
 they
were called, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>w=
ould</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> be immersed in a pool of water, often in a spec=
ial
building made for that purpose.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>As they stepped out o=
f the
waters, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> were literally clothed in a gown to remind them=
 that
they had put on - <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DGramE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>c=

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> themselves with - Christ. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In our own denominati=
on, we
Disciples practice <b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>baptism by imme=
rsion.</b><span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><br>
We also practice what we call <b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>&#82=
20;believers
baptism,&#8221;</b> rather than infant baptism.<span

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>At the same time, bec=
ause
Disciples from the beginning have valued<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Christian unity, we d=
o not
insist that ours is the only way.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </=
span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Baptism is always int=
o the
body of Christ, not into one particular religious body. <o:p></o:p></span><=
/p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>We are fully acceptin=
g of
other forms and ages of baptism <o:p></o:p></span></p>

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> we have gained some understanding of this sacra=
ment

 and
public sign of God&#8217;s inward grace. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The grace of God alwa=
ys
precedes and makes possible our faithful response in baptism.<o:p></o:p></s=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>We are not saved by o=
ur own
works - and that includes baptism.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; <=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>We are saved by the g=
ift of
God&#8217;s love and grace. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

occurs, our faith and God&#8217;s grace are present.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

I have come to cherish this form of baptism <o:p></o:p></span></p>

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> of its strong symbolism.<span

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Baptism reenacts the death, burial and resurrect=
